Orioles Struggle in 13-5 Loss to Braves as Kremer Allows 4 Runs

Dean Kremer allows four runs as the Orioles fall 13-5 to the Braves in Spring Training. Michael Harris II's two homers lead Atlanta’s offensive surge.

Braves’ Bats Overpower Orioles in Lopsided 13-5 Spring Training Loss

The Baltimore Orioles had a tough day on the mound and in the field, as the Atlanta Braves capitalized on defensive miscues and an offensive explosion to hand the O’s a 13-5 defeat at Ed Smith Stadium. Dean Kremer became the first Oriole pitcher to work into the fifth inning this spring, but his outing was marred by home runs and control issues, while Atlanta’s Michael Harris II put on a show with two homers in the same inning.

Kremer's Tough Outing: A Mixed Bag of Results

Kremer worked 4+ innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits, including two home runs. He walked three and struck out two over 77 pitches, making him the first Baltimore pitcher this spring to start the fifth inning. Despite the rough outing, Kremer highlighted some positives in his pitch mix and endurance.

However, his overall spring numbers remain concerning. Through 12 innings, Kremer has allowed:

  • 12 runs on 17 hits

  • 6 home runs

  • 8 walks

  • 11 strikeouts

Manager Brandon Hyde acknowledged Kremer’s struggles but remains confident in his development.

Braves' Nine-Run Fifth Inning Buries Orioles

Atlanta’s offense erupted in the fifth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring nine runs. Orioles minor league reliever Logan Rinehart bore the brunt of the damage, allowing six runs—four unearned due to two errors by Jordan Westburg. Sandy León blasted a three-run homer off Rinehart, while Harris II capped off the rally with his second home run of the inning, a towering three-run shot off the scoreboard.

Orioles’ Offense Shows Some Life Late

While Atlanta’s bats dominated early, Baltimore managed to get on the board in the fifth inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk drawn by Cedric Mullins and a fielder’s choice RBI by Ryan O’Hearn.

The O’s added some late fireworks with solo home runs from Ryan Mountcastle (his second in as many games) and Dylan Carlson in the seventh and ninth innings, respectively. Colton Cowser also reached base twice via walks and stole a bag.

Bullpen Notes & Key Takeaways

  • Seranthony Domínguez rebounded from a disastrous outing against the Rays, throwing his first scoreless inning of the spring.

  • Gregory Soto delivered a clean seventh inning, striking out one.

  • Keegan Akin gave up a two-run homer in the eighth, continuing his spring struggles.

Injury & Roster Updates

  • Gunnar Henderson continues to progress from his right intercostal strain, taking ground balls and hitting in the cage.

  • Andrew Kittredge underwent left knee surgery and is expected to be out until at least June.

Looking Ahead

The Orioles (8-9-1) will face the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, FL, on Thursday at 1:07 PM ET. Cade Povich, who has allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings this spring, will take the mound in a bid to secure a rotation spot.
