Orioles' Spring Training Spotlight: Young Stars Light Up in a 7-3 Win

Emerging talent shines in 2025’s second spring training game as the Orioles set the stage for a promising season.

The Orioles delivered an electrifying 7-3 spring training win over the Philadelphia Phillies—a game that not only showcased veteran poise but also the explosive promise of our emerging talent.

Game Highlights

Dominant Mound Work:

Brandon Young set the tone on the mound, tossing 3 innings of stellar baseball. He allowed just 2 hits, no earned runs, and struck out 2 batters—all while painting 29 of his 38 pitches as strikes (76%). His command was a bright signal that our future starts are in good hands.

Explosive Offense:

Coby Mayo ignited the offense with a two-run single that clocked in as the hardest-hit ball of spring training at an impressive 113 mph. Meanwhile, Vimeal Machin contributed 2 RBIs and a powerful home run, coming just one hit (a triple) shy of completing the cycle—a performance that left fans buzzing.

Emerging Talent on Display

Pitching Precision:

In his first start, Cade Povich wowed with incredible efficiency—throwing just 26 pitches over 2 innings, he recorded a strikeout and kept the Phillies completely off-balance. His masterful control is a glimpse of the future of our pitching staff.

Catching and Power:

Sammy Basallo, already recognized as one of our top catching prospects, showcased his dual-threat ability by combining power with athletic finesse. With an astonishing .953 OPS across three minor league levels in 2023, Basallo hit balls measured at 104.9 mph and 107.4 mph, proving he can drive the ball with authority.

Building the Future, Game by Game

The combined brilliance of Brandon Young, Coby Mayo, Cade Povich, and Samuel Basallo signals a bright and promising future for the Orioles. Each pitch and every hit builds a foundation for a team poised for greatness—one game at a time.
